Information about Well-Child Care and Exams

Well-child exams start shortly after birth and continue through early adulthood. These regularly scheduled exams play a vital role in monitoring your child’s growth and development, offering us the opportunity to build and foster a collaborative relationship with you and your child.

We always encourage open communication, so you have the chance to address any questions or concerns during the exam. As children get older, we also bring them into this partnership. A strong relationship between all of us helps keep your child healthy and well.

During well-child exams, typical services could include:

  • Nutritional guidance
  • Safety and general care recommendations
  • Physical examination
  • Preventative care, such as immunizations

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that your child have one of these visits at each of the following ages:

  • 3 to 5 days
  • 2 weeks
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • 2 1/2 years
  • Ages 3 – 21, yearly

We’re always available to see children who are sick. However, bringing your child to us for an illness shouldn’t take the place of a well-child exam. Exams devoted exclusively to health and wellness have their own goals and benefits.

Well-child exams are designed to not only keep on top of any health changes, they also measure and track your child’s growth and development during crucial childhood years. During these routine appointments, your child is also given age-appropriate immunizations.

If you’re concerned about your child’s health or development before your next well-child exam, contact your child’s primary care doctor to schedule an appointment.

Please bring the following to your child’s visit:

  • Your photo ID and insurance card
  • Co-payment, if required by your insurance plan
  • Full list of medications with dosages, including over-the-counter supplements
  • Immunization records
  • Detailed history of symptoms and treatments
  • List of questions for their care team

Many insurance plans may cover well-child exams. Since coverage can vary, it’s best to confirm with your insurance provider directly before scheduling a visit.
