In order to accurately diagnose heart conditions and offer precise treatment, our heart specialists use non-invasive diagnostic testing designed to measure the heart's performance, pinpoint problems and accurately identify the most appropriate treatment. Providence Heart & Vascular Institute of Los Angeles is at the forefront of cardiovascular treatment and therapies. One of our hospitals was the first of two in the world to enroll patients in a clinical trial for a novel stroke prevention device. We were also the first in the nation to complete a commercial implant of WATCHMAN. Both the clinical trial and the WATCHMAN device help reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation.

As our patient, you can take part in one of our many clinical trials. These include FDA-regulated trials to develop new cardiovascular therapies. Providence also participates in national cardiovascular data registries to continually improve outcomes and patient care.

Providence Saint John’s Leads the Way with Pulsed Field Ablation

In March 2024, Providence Saint John’s Health Center became the first hospital in the greater Los Angeles area to provide pulsed field ablation (PFA), a new treatment for atrial fibrillation (AFib). This minimally invasive treatment uses electrical impulses to destroy the damaged heart cells that cause AFib, an irregular heartbeat that can lead to stroke or heart failure.

Our cardiologists view PFA as a truly groundbreaking procedure because it’s safer, much quicker and more effective for our patients than current ablation treatments.
