Heart Conditions We Treat

Services and Treatments for Your Heart Concerns

The Heart & Vascular Institute makes use of advanced techniques to provide optimal services and treatments for cardiovascular diseases.

To accurately diagnose heart conditions and offer precise treatment, our heart specialists use non-invasive diagnostic testing designed to measure the heart's performance, pinpoint problems and accurately identify the most appropriate treatment. These techniques, along with invasive diagnostic and interventional therapies, make up our wide range of testing procedures.

These state-of-the-art diagnostic tests include:

  • Arterial duplex scans, both carotid and femoral
  • Cardiac catheterization, inclusive of coronary angiogram
  • Carotid stents
  • Echocardiogram, including transthoracic, intracardiac, exercise and transesophageal
  • Electrocardiogram, including standard EKG and signal-averaged electrocardiogram (SAECG)
  • Electrophysiologic studies and testing
  • Endovascular therapy
  • Pharmacological stress echocardiography
  • Tilt table testing
  • Treadmill stress test
  • Ultrafast CT scan for coronary calcium score
  • Vascular surgery
  • Venous duplex scans

Through minimally invasive surgical techniques, we’re able to help patients potentially shorten their hospital stay, reduce the chance of complications or infections and experience less post-operative pain when compared to traditional surgery.

Some minimally invasive surgical techniques that we perform include:

  • Ablation therapy
  • Angioplasty
  • Atherectomy
  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure
  • Automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillators (AICD/ICD)
  • Balloon valvuloplasty
    • Transradial cardiac catheterization
  • Cardiopulmonary support (CPS)
  • Drug-eluting stent (DES) placement
  • Impella, a percutaneously inserted ventricular assist device (VAD)
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump placement (IABP)
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) – a one time, minimally invasive procedure that reduces stroke risk and bleeding worry for life
  • Pacemaker and biventricular pacemaker
  • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
  • Peripheral angiography
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
  • Stent placement
  • Thrombectomy for clot removal
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
  • Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR)

Your surgeon will determine if you’re a candidate for minimally invasive surgery and discuss your options with you.

For many people living with heart disease, there may come a time when you need surgery or a procedure in the hospital.

We provide expert surgical treatment, along with the post-care support you need to fully recover, which could include:

  • Adult congenital defect repairs
  • Arrhythmia surgery
  • Bloodless heart surgery
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Heart bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
  • Maze and mini-maze procedures
  • Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy
  • Septal defect repair for atrial septal defect (ASO) or patent foramen ovale (PFO)
  • Vein harvesting

Providence Saint John’s Leads the Way with Pulsed Field Ablation

In March 2024, Providence Saint John’s Health Center became the first hospital in the greater Los Angeles area to provide pulsed field ablation (PFA), a new treatment for atrial fibrillation (AFib). This minimally invasive treatment uses electrical impulses to destroy the damaged heart cells that cause AFib, an irregular heartbeat that can lead to stroke or heart failure.

Our cardiologists view PFA as a truly groundbreaking procedure because it’s safer, much quicker and more effective for our patients than current ablation treatments.

Life-Saving Care

Specialized Medical Team for ECMO

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-support system used for patients with severe heart and/or lung failure. Managed by our specialized medical team, Providence Saint John's was one of the busiest ECMO centers in the nation during COVID-19, conducting nine clinical trials to aid research efforts in fighting the virus.

ECMO temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs by pumping blood outside the body, removing carbon dioxide and adding oxygen before it’s returned to the patient. This system allows the heart and lungs to rest and heal and is often used in critical cases such as severe respiratory distress, heart failure or post-surgery recovery.

ECMO is often a life-saving intervention when conventional treatments aren’t effective.
