Recognized as an integral part of Providence, our volunteers provide encouragement, comfort and strength to our patients and visitors. Whether working in the gift shop, delivering food to our patients or lending a hand in one of our community outreach programs, helping others in their healing process can be a very satisfying and inspiring experience. Our Providence volunteers often make new friends and learn new skills along the way.

Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center welcomes volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. After an initial interview to match interests and schedules with our ministry’s needs, volunteers attend an orientation to become familiar with Providence’s Mission, values and department roles before starting assignments.

Volunteers must meet specific criteria to ensure they are prepared for their roles within the hospital:

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Minimum commitment of 100 hours or six months.
  • At least one four-hour shift per week; additional shifts may be available.
  • Sign an agreement, confidentiality statement and complete annual onboarding requirements.
  • Wear the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center uniform and ID badge during shifts; follow all dress code policies.
  • Complete annual TB testing (in birth month), stroke education and flu vaccine or masking during flu season.

After an interview to match interests and schedules, volunteers attend orientation before starting.

Most areas of the hospital, including the Disney Family Cancer Center, have openings for volunteer assistance. Some areas will require more mobility than others, some require the ability to lift more than 10 pounds without difficulty, and some may require special training. We believe there is a perfect placement for all who wish to volunteer. Below are some of the areas of opportunity:

  • Customer Service
  • Gift Shop
  • Information Desk
  • Admitting Ambassador
  • Disney Family Cancer Center
  • Emergency Department
  • Nursing Units
    • Critical Care – ICU
    • Med-Surg – Orthopedics, Oncology, Bariatric
    • Labor & Delivery / Mother/Baby
    • NICU
    • Telemetry – Cardiology, Neurology
  • Physical Therapy and Acute Rehab
  • Radiology
  • Retail Pharmacy

Please note that we do not offer a shadowing program at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. Any clinical rounding/education is performed through our Clinical Education department.

Whether 16 or 96, we have a perfect placement for those with a volunteer’s heart for helping serve the medical community.

Volunteering is a meaningful experience. Whether it is in a customer service capacity or helping on one of our nursing units or in specialty areas, donating your time helps the hospital in so many ways.

Volunteer do not need clinical experience. We have several customer service areas that could use assistance with greeting patients and their families, helping them with wayfinding, escorting them to testing areas or helping departments that are discharging patients when they’re ready to go home. We also have shifts available in our beautiful Gift Shop.

For those with interest in the medical field, volunteering is NOT a clinical rotation with hands-on experience; but you will be on the nursing floors, specialty areas or in our emergency department assisting the staff with small tasks. You will be able to observe how staff operate, how they respond to different kinds of codes and the daily care of patients from an actual nursing environment. Building relationships with the staff and other volunteers, you’ll also have access to talk about the profession you’d like to know more about. Hopefully, it can help you find some clarity in how to map your future.

Volunteering can be used for high school, applications for college and general community service hours to meet specific needs for the volunteer.

Volunteers will have free parking on the days they volunteer and can enjoy a 20% discount on prepared food in our cafeteria with their ID badge. Volunteers are invited to participate in appropriate staff/caregiver events and activities.
