Pharmacy Residency Program
At Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, we are committed to providing an environment with advanced education and training experiences. The Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy education and challenges each resident to realize his or her maximum potential.
Pharmacy residents will gain advanced knowledge and experience in:
- Clinical, evidence-based decision making in a variety of specialties and patient populations
- Being an effective part of an interdisciplinary team
- Leadership, teaching, and precepting
- Administration and the intricate workings of hospital committees, such as
- Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T)
- Medication Safety
- Innovative technology and new pharmacy initiatives
Our dedicated preceptors and well-rounded program structure support pharmacy residents in achieving professional competence in delivering patient-centered care.
Program structure
Pharmacy residents complete 12 months of learning experience rotations including both core required rotations and an elective rotation. The goals, objectives, and learning activities for each rotation are developed by preceptors and the Residency Program Director and expectations are shared with the resident before the start of each rotation.

Compensation and benefits

The Pharmacy Resident is a full-time position and qualifies for Providence employee benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as paid vacation time. Providence offers life insurance, retirement plans, and other employee discount programs.
Residents also receive their own work area, hospital phone extension, travel and registration reimbursement for residency related conferences

Programs and services
Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center (PSJMC) is the second largest hospital serving the San Fernando Valley communities. It is an acute care, not-for-profit community hospital offering state-of-the-art technology and high quality, compassionate care in a variety of medical specialties.
PSJMC offers inpatient and outpatient care, including Oncology, Women’s Services, Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), Orthopedics, Rehabilitation, Cardiology, Surgery, and Emergency Department/STEMI receiving center. Unique services include an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, the Robotic Telestroke Program, the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center, the Bariatric Wellness Center, and Certified Thrombolytic Capable Stroke Center.

Qualifications
The following are required of Pharmacy Residency Applicants:
- Graduates or candidates for graduation of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program (or one in process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).
- The applicant must qualify for licensure and, if accepted, become licensed to practice in the state of California by September 30 of the residency year.
How to apply
PSJMC participates in the ASHP Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) program and the ASHP Matching Program. Applicants must submit their application materials through PhORCAS, including:
- A Letter of intent
- Curriculum Vitae
- Academic transcripts
- Three reference recommendations (at least one from an employer is preferred)
Applicants offered an interview will be notified by the Residency Program Director. On-site interviews are conducted between the end of January through the beginning of March.
