- Coughing or vomiting blood
- Difficulty breathing and/or shortness of breath
- Difficulty speaking

It’s important for patients to understand that Emergency Departments are for true emergencies. If you don’t know whether your emergency is life-threatening, please take the safe approach and come in.
However, if you don’t need this high level of care, consider other options like urgent care or a visit to your primary care physician – which are also more affordable.

Our emergency care staff are highly trained and include:
- Board-certified emergency care physicians
- Emergency department technicians
- Emergency-trained registered nurses
- Physician assistants
Our hospital contracts with Vituity Medical Group to provide physician services in the Emergency Department. These physicians are independent contractors, not employees of the hospital, who contract separately with healthcare insurers and healthcare plans. As a result, they might not be in the same networks as Providence St. Mary Medical Center.
If you have any questions about whether these physicians are covered by your insurance, you should contact your insurance provider directly. To contact the ER group that contracts with our hospital, please call 760-946-8876.
