Comprehensive NICU Resources

Parents and guardians trust our NICU because of our advanced medical care, expert care teams and wide range of resource and support services – from lactation guidance to music therapy programs. We’re here to help you bring your newborn home.

Our NICU features innovative and high-tech bassinets called Giraffes. The Giraffe significantly reduces the need to transfer infants because it can be used as an open table warmer and converted into an incubator/isolette at the touch of a button.

The Giraffe provides:

  • 360-degree rotation
  • Design to block outside light and sound, creating a quiet environment for your baby
  • Safety and comfort for your infant
  • Scale to weigh your baby
  • Surgery-ready setting, if necessary
  • Temperature-controlled environment

From care planning to ensuring you feel prepared for discharge, we provide thoughtful NICU services to help you feel supported, informed and involved throughout your baby’s stay.

  • Collaborative family conferences – Our family conferences are held on an as-needed basis. Your care team meets to plan your baby’s care, consult with one another, check progress and discuss next steps, while involving you in every decision.
  • Lactation and feeding support – A lactation consultant is available by appointment twice a week to provide bedside education and guidance on breastfeeding, with additional support as needed.
  • Rooming In program – We’re committed to helping you and your baby go home. With our Rooming In program, you’re encouraged to spend an entire day or night providing total care for your newborn under nurse supervision. This program takes place a day or two before discharge, so that you feel as prepared and supported as possible.
  • Visiting and overnight stays – Parents are welcome 24/7, but we encourage one parent to visit at a time. We provide:
    • Complimentary parking for the duration of your baby’s stay
    • Meal tickets for one parent to enjoy at our cafeteria
    • Sleeper chair at the bedside

To help deepen a parent’s bond with their newborn, we offer kangaroo care – a method of skin-to-skin contact coordinated around your baby’s daily care routine. Kangaroo care is important for all newborns, but especially for premature infants to help their vital development.

Further benefits include:

  • Calming and relaxing experience for both parent and baby
  • Enhanced digestion and feeding success
  • Improved attachment and emotional connection
  • Longer and deeper sleep cycles for your baby
  • Promotion of breast milk production

When your baby needs care in the NICU, we understand it can be a stressful time for your family. At Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, we’ve made it a little easier with AngelEye Health’s CameraSystem™, which provides secure, real-time video access to your baby on your phone, tablet or computer.

  • Secure and parent-controlled – Your baby’s webcam can only be activated by you. All videos are encrypted, and no footage is stored.
  • Share with loved ones – Invite loved ones to view the livestream, so even those who can’t visit in person can meet your newest family member.
  • Stay connected – Real-time video of your baby helps you feel connected and present, even when you’re away from the hospital.

These services are free of charge to all NICU parents, so you can stay connected to your baby when it matters most. If you experience any technical difficulties, AngelEye Health’s customer support is available 24/7 through their website.

Our NICU Music Therapy Program helps ease the way for patients and their families – offering comfort, connection and developmental support through the healing power of music, led by our board-certified music therapists.

  • Calming and nurturing – To create a peaceful NICU environment, we offer:
    • Soft lullabies and live instrument music
    • Rhythmic techniques to help regulate alertness, feeding and sleep
  • Proven benefits – Music therapy in the NICU has been shown to:
    • Enhance neurological and emotional development
    • Improve feeding and weight gain
    • Reduce stress for both infants and parents
    • Shorten hospital stays
    • Nurture the parent-infant bond
  • Strengthen connection – You’re invited to sing or hum along; help write a lullaby or simply observe. These sessions help deepen the bond between you and your baby. Participation is optional and you can opt out at any time.

Along with comprehensive in-hospital care, the NICU at Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center features a specialized team to assist parents after they take their baby home.

Through collaboration with the pediatrician, the High-Risk Infant Follow-Up program specialists evaluate the baby’s physical, neurological and emotional growth during the crucial first three years of development.
