Birth Justice Collaborative – a vision rooted in healing and community

The Black and Indigenous Birth Justice Collaborative is rooted in healing, connection and nourishment. This initiative recognizes the critical role that birth justice leaders play in supporting birthing parents and their families. This work is often unseen and underfunded. Birth justice work is relentless, extending beyond a 9-to-5 schedule to provide care, advocacy, and cultural restoration during one of life’s most profound experiences.
The St. Joseph Fund is proud to support Washington state-based organizations in this transformative effort. Rather than imposing traditional funding models that often challenge grassroots organizations, we prioritize capacity building and holistic support. It creates healing spaces where birth workers can replenish their energy, build strong networks, and sustain their vital efforts in the community. By centering the wisdom and leadership of Black and Indigenous birth workers, the initiative reclaims cultural birthing traditions and ensures that families experience birth with dignity, safety and love.
The Birth Justice Collaborative also reimagines resource distribution. Instead of a competitive grant process, the initiative trusts and empowers community partners to identify emerging organizations that need operational support. This approach strengthens the entire birth justice ecosystem, ensuring that resources flow directly to those making the most significant impact.
Birth justice is about more than survival. It’s about joy, restoration and thriving families. By investing in partners in this space, we help create communities where every birth is a moment of love, strength, and possibility.
