About Colonoscopy

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center provides colonoscopy as an outpatient procedure, typically taking less than 30 minutes to complete. It allows for thorough evaluation of conditions like ulcers, polyps, cancer, and colorectal issues such as inflammation or infections. Precise imaging assists in diagnosing colon cancer and creating appropriate treatment plans. If no polyps are found, this procedure is typically repeated once every 10 years.

Due to the sedation used during the procedure, arranging transportation home is essential.

Alternative Screening Methods

Apart from colonoscopy, non-invasive screening options like the FIT test are available. These tests, including Cologuard, detect blood in stool samples and use DNA to identify cancer cells. Your doctor may recommend repeating these tests once or twice a year if initial results are negative.
