Our Approach
At Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro, our rehabilitation services are dedicated to helping patients regain mobility and achieve the highest quality of life.
Our Acute Rehabilitation Center provides inpatient care that includes daily physician direction, 24-hour nursing supervision and diverse services to maximize recovery. Utilizing leading-edge technologies like Bioness® and robotic exoskeletons, we provide personalized treatment plans that accelerate healing and build back patients’ confidence in their mobility, daily activities, cognition and swallowing.
We’re proud to serve the South Bay community as part of an accredited Primary Stroke Center and nationally ranked facility by Uniform Data System (UDS®). Our commitment to the highest standards of rehabilitation care is reflected by our Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF®) certification and our leadership in both regional and national discharge rates.
To ensure the best possible experience, patients are required to meet specific criteria for admission to the Acute Rehabilitation Center.
These requirements include:
- A qualifying diagnosis that requires intensive rehabilitation
- Ability to follow and carry out simple instructions and exercises
- Ability to participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy per day, five days per week
- At least two types of therapy intervention, typically occupational and physical therapy, with speech therapy added if indicated
- Received an identified discharge plan to either return home or go to a community setting like an assisted living center
- Rehabilitation nursing for 24-hour medical management and reinforcement of functional activities, including night-time activities of daily living and bowel/bladder programs
Our acute rehabilitation program requires a qualifying diagnosis. Along with comprehensive therapies and medical regimens, our acute rehabilitation services are often used to treat conditions such as:
- Amputation
- Brain injury
- Critical illness myopathy
- Multiple trauma
- Neurological disorders
- Guillain-Barré syndrome
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Polyneuropathy
- Orthopedic conditions
- Complicated hip fractures
- Complicated joint replacements
- Severe debility, weakness
- Spinal cord injury
- Stroke

Acute rehabilitation requires a referral from a physician.
Once we’ve received your referral order, our patient intake coordinator and physical medicine physician review your medical information to determine your rehabilitation and medical needs.
- The physical medicine physician confirms the recommendation for acute rehabilitation or suggests an alternate setting that’s appropriate for you.
- If your need for acute rehabilitation is confirmed, the patient intake coordinator contacts your insurance provider and facilitates your transfer to our center.
