Providence and Northgate Markets partner to promote health equity

Across Los Angeles County, Providence and Northgate Markets are meeting community members where they are.

Through a partnership called ¡Mas Vida, Mas Salud! (More Life, More Health!), the organizations are working to address health inequities in communities with predominantly low-income, uninsured and underinsured Latinx and Black individuals. In 2024, health screenings, education and/or resources were provided to more than 1,100 people across Southern California.

At tables outside select Northgate stores, Providence community health workers (CHWs) provide resources, like free hypertension screenings, in Spanish and English.

“We’re here to meet them where they are ... and to work together to get them to the health they deserve,” said Amy Santos, senior CHW.

Through conversation, the CHWs create safe spaces for community members to think about and take action for their long-term health. “We listen to them to get an idea of what's going on,” said Sheila Valencia Ochoa, senior CHW. "And we let them know, 'We're here, we’re coming back.’”

Another goal of this partnership is to support community resilience through nutrition. In Los Angeles, Providence and Northgate collaborate with community-based organizations for food distributions, nutrition classes and more.

Last year, more than 325 families were supported through holiday food drives. About 150 of those families received Thanksgiving turkeys and groceries from a South L.A. event held by Resilient Agency, an organization dedicated to providing youth development and community intervention services to residents most affected by violence.

“They’re grateful for the blessing ... to be able to put food on the table, especially during the holiday season when there’s that added pressure,” said Michael Guedel, executive director and co-founder of Resilient Agency.

Santos, Valencia Ochoa and Guedel expressed their gratitude to all who make this impactful program possible.
