Providence Swedish Cancer Institute nurse navigators provide invaluable service for patients

By working directly with oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and other clinicians, patient navigators in the South Puget Sound area help patients understand and follow their cancer treatment plans. By having someone else to lean on and lead the way, patients and their caregivers can focus on getting well. In 2024, Providence Swedish contributed $650,000 to the nurse navigator program, benefiting more than 800 patients.
“At a time when you feel like your world had been turned upside down, she was like an angel in disguise,” said patient Lori Pulver of working with patient navigator Karry Trout. “I am so thankful she was by my side. It was like she had a crystal ball. Every time I felt like I had a question, she would call.”
Providence Swedish has dedicated nurse navigators for thoracic, breast, head and neck, gastrointestinal and genitourinary (or urogenital) cancers:
- Becky Goad, RN, BSN, head and neck navigator
- Andrea Potter, RN, thoracic navigator
- Karry Trout, RT (R)(M), breast navigator
- Danielle Stevens, RN, GI & GU navigator
“We weren’t even aware of this program when I was diagnosed … and then we got a call from Andrea,” said lung cancer patient John Farnsworth. “We relied on her for so many things and she was able to answer so many questions. She actually helped us avoid doctor visits.”
Navigators understand “the system” and act as advocates, helping patients navigate treatment. This free service is available as a key link between patients/families and providers.
Some of the services navigators provide include:
- Consultations with patients and their families to assess medical and emotional needs
- Serve as a liaison between the clinical care team and the patient.
- Coordinate cancer support groups and help in accessing educational and support services
- Coordinate supportive care appointments before, during, and after courses of treatment
