A serious car accident can turn life upside down in an instant. For Ana and Corina that life-changing moment happened when they were involved in an accident that left their 18-year-old nephew in critical condition and in need of extensive medical care at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.

From the very start, the doctors, nurses and administrators at Covenant Health provided the highest quality of care, said the family. With internal injuries so severe that they required a ventilator, dialysis and other life-saving measures, Ana and Corina attribute their nephew’s recovery to Covenant’s unwavering support and expert medical care.

Key to caregiving was extensive Spanish translation services to bridge a language barrier and to ensure the family understood every step of the process. The emotional support the family received was just as invaluable, say Ana and Corina. Doctors and nurses not only treated their nephew, but cared for the entire family, ensuring that they didn’t feel like they were alone.

“I feel like they put themselves in our shoes,” said Corina.

The family also received guidance in navigating the cost of care.

Covenant’s Mission of serving all, especially those who are vulnerable, means more than taking care of people’s health needs. In many cases, it means helping underserved patients establish insurance coverage when they are eligible, even in the middle of their care.

At the time of the accident, the family didn’t have insurance that provided medical coverage. With help from Audrey Perez, a member of Covenant’s patient financial services team, the family was able to understand their choices and get help with an application for Medicaid. With that guidance, the family was able to qualify for coverage as quickly as possible, removing one more worry.

After more than a month in the hospital, Ana and Corina say their nephew is doing much better. Covenant is supporting the family as they navigate the next steps in their nephew’s recovery, coordinating with other specialists and ensuring their nephew receives proper follow-up and rehabilitation.

“We are very grateful for everything they’ve done and continue to do,” said Ana. “They are continuing to help us with what comes next.”

Corina says the staff at Covenant has helped her nephew in every way, even emotionally.

“Everything they've done, they’ve done with a lot of love,” she said.
